Green Bay (24-1, 14-1 HL) women's basketball team will host Butler (12-14, 8-7
HL) in its final regular season home game Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. in front
of a sold out crowd at the Kress Events Center. Saturday's contest is the
annual PinkZone game in addition to senior day.
Having
already clinched at least a share of its 14th consecutive regular season
Horizon League championship with its 72-36 win over Valpo Thursday, with a win
Saturday over Butler Green Bay would have sole possession of the title. The
streak is the longest in the nation for regular season conference
championships. Butler is currently in fifth place in the standings and looking
to move up in the standings as the postseason nears.
Saturday's
game is the third sold out crowd since the opening of the Kress Events Center
in 2007 and second sell out of this season. Green Bay sold out last season's
PinkZone game against Butler (Feb. 26) and this season's contest against
Milwaukee on Feb. 4.
The Phoenix
is coming off one of its best defensive performances of the season with its win
over Valpo while Butler comes to Green Bay after suffering a 54-52 loss at
Milwaukee Thursday night.
ABOUT THE SERIES... Saturday will be the 46th meeting
between these two teams with Green Bay owning an overall record of 38-7 and
20-2 in Green Bay. The Phoenix has won 32 consecutive games against Butler as the
Bulldogs are one of four Horizon League teams fifth year head coach Matt
Bollant has never lost to, owning a 10-0 record.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT... Trailing 27-25 at the half, Butler
battled back and forth with Milwaukee in the second half Thursday at the
Klotsche Center. The Bulldogs made a comeback in the final three minutes before
running out of time, suffering a 54-52 loss to the Panthers. Hannah Douglas and
Jenna Cobb each scored 11 points for Butler while reigning Horizon League
Player of the Week Sarah Hamm tied a team high nine rebounds.
LAST MEETING (Jan. 26, 2012 at
Butler, Ind.)... Green
Bay scored a season-low 36 points as it held Butler to a season-low three field
goals and 18-percent shooting. The Phoenix defense held Butler without a field
goal in the final 8:40 of the first half. Green Bay's 29-point lead at the half
(42-13) was its largest of the season.
20-WIN SEASONS... With its 24-1 record, Green Bay has
secured its 13th consecutive 20-win season. The Phoenix has had 35 straight winning
season in the history of the 39-year-old program. For the 12th time in program
history Green Bay has won 24 games or more in a single season.
SENIOR SALUTE... Immediately following Saturday's
game, Green Bay will honor its senior class of Katie Bushman (Phillips, Wis.),
Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.). This
year's class has been a part of three NCAA Tournament appearances and two
Horizon League Tournament Championships while compiling an overall record of
115-12 and an impressive 65-4 conference record, finishing a season 18-0 on two
occasions.
PINKZONE DAY... Saturday's game is Green Bay's annual
PinkZone game in order to raise dollars for The Cancer TEAM at Bellin Health.
Fans can bid on jerseys worn during the game here
or at the game. Funds raised through raffles and the jersey auction will be
donated to the Patient Assistance Fund. Broadway Automotive will also donate $5
for every new like on its Facebook page.
