GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
With success comes much-deserved recognition and the No.
9/9 Green Bay (20-0, 9-0 HL) women's basketball team continues to prove just
that. Senior Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) picked up three honors in the
past week as she was added to the Wade Trophy Watch List and named to the CoSIDA
Academic All-District Team. Wojta also earned Horizon League Player of the Week
honors last week for the fourth time this season.
"Green Bay has had great players all along and that helps pave the way
for players like Julie who is also very deserving of the recognition she's been
getting," said head coach Matt Bollant.
The preseason State Farm Wade Trophy Watch List was released in August,
with 25 initial candidates on the list. Annually, during early February, the
Wade Trophy Committee votes on players to be added to the list with Wojta being
one of eight additions this season. The finalists will be announced in March.
"The awards and recognition are great but they're team awards," Wojta
said. "I'm honored to be a part of this team and the success we've been having
but I'm really just focusing on trying to get us to the next step."
Wojta continues to reach milestones in her career with the Phoenix. In
Green Bay's most recent game against Milwaukee, Feb. 4, Wojta moved into the
top 10 in career field-goals made with 535. The senior captain went 7-for-13
from the field against the Panthers, finishing with a game-high 16 points. Wojta also ranks in the top 10 in both scoring
and rebounding, one of seven players in program history to be in the top 10 in
both scoring and rebounding.
The most impressive performance by Wojta this season came Jan. 7 at
Milwaukee as the 6'0" forward finished the game with 27 points, 12 steals and
five assists in 25 minutes of play. Wojta's 12 steals were a Horizon League and
program record with 11 coming in the first half of play. The NCAA record for
steals in a single game is 14.
The prestigious Wade Trophy, considered "The Heisman of Women's
Basketball," is present annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by
the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA. The
2012 Wade Trophy winner will be announced during the WBCA National Convention,
which will be held in conjunction with the 2012 NCAA Women's Final Four in
Denver.
CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM... Wojta's third accolade in the past week was being named to Capital One
All-District women's basketball team. With a 3.58 grade-point average, the Business
Administration major is one of five players on the District 6 team and only
player from Wisconsin and the Horizon League.
The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top
student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the
classroom.
