GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - As part
of the 10th annual BracketBusters event sponsored by Sears, the Green Bay men's
basketball team will host Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. The
game will be a Festival
Foods Family Game, with discounted tickets and the chance for youth fans to
shoot Free Throws with the Phoenix after the game.
In a series that dates back to 1969-70, EMU and Green
Bay have played nine times, with the Phoenix holding a 5-4 advantage. The
Phoenix has won two of the four meetings in Green Bay. The series includes a
variety of interesting scores, including a 47-45 Green Bay win on the road in
1982 and a 109-99 loss at home in 1971. The last contest between the two schools
resulted in a 73-69 Phoenix win on Dec. 14, 2005.
The Eagles, who were picked to finish last in the
Mid-American Conference West Division in 2011-12, may be the surprise of
the conference in the early part of the league season, leading the West with a
5-2 record and a 10-11 overall mark. Led by first-year head coach Rob Murphy,
the Eagles are led by senior guard Darrell Lampley, who is averaging 13.3 points
per game.
Per the BracketBusters agreement, Green Bay will
return the game and play at Eastern Michigan in one of the next two seasons.
Last season, the Phoenix played at Southern Illinois and lost 61-60. SIU will
play Green Bay at the Resch Center in 2012-13.
Green Bay (9-12, 5-6 HL), after wins over Valpo and
Butler last week, will complete a three-game homestand on Saturday when it
hosts Milwaukee at 1 p.m. The game at the Resch Center will be the Black
Out Cancer game, with the team wearing black jerseys at home for the first
time in program history to raise awareness for cancer research and generate
funds for the Patient Assistance Fund at The Cancer Team at Bellin Health.
The first 1,000 fans on Saturday will also get an
Alec Brown bobblehead doll. At the conclusion of the game, youth fans can
participate in Free Throws with the Phoenix.
