GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
After playing three games on the road, the No. 12/11
Green Bay (15-0, 5-0 HL) women's basketball team is happy to return to the
confines of the Kress Events Center Thursday, Jan. 19 as it hosts Youngstown
State (8-8, 2-3 HL) at 7 p.m. Green Bay is one of two undefeated teams in the
country with No. 1/1 Baylor (17-0) being the other.
Thursday's game will feature the top two preseason Horizon League
players in Green Bay's Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) and Youngstown State's
Brandi Brown. In the preseason All-League voting, Wojta received the most first
place votes (15) while Brown received the most points (260) and 11 first-place
votes, edging Wojta by one point for Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Wojta leads the league in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game while
Brown is third, scoring an average of 17.0 points per contest. Brown leads the
way on the boards with 10.3 per contest, edging Wojta who is second with an
average of 10.1.
Green Bay is currently on a 35 consecutive regular season winning
streak, the longest in the history of the 38-year-old program. Its current No.
12 ranking in the AP Top 25 Poll is the highest in program history as the
Phoenix has won its last 31 regular season games against Horizon League
opponents and last 24 contests held at the Kress Events Center.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS... Youngstown State enters Thursday's contest following back-to-back losses
for the first time this season. With their 8-8 record, the Penguins have
already surpassed their win total from all last season. The Penguins were 3-57
combined in the two years prior to head coach Bob Boldon's arrival. Youngstown
State last had eight wins in its first 16 games in the 2007-08 season. YSU's
next win will give it nine wins, matching its total from the previous three
seasons combined.
Green Bay will look to take away Youngstown State's biggest strength as
the Penguins rank fifth in the country in three-point field goals per game
(8.6). Sophomore guard Monica Touvelle is third in the league shooting 41.1
percent from beyond the arc.
ABOUT THE SERIES... Green Bay owns an overall record of 25-1 against YSU and is 13-1 when
hosting the Penguins. In the last meeting between these two teams, Feb. 5 2011,
Green Bay jumped out to a 26-0 run before allowing the Penguins to score with
8:07 remaining in the first half of play. Green Bay's 59-point margin of
victory in its 84-25 win was its largest since moving to Division I in 1987.
The defeat was the Penguins largest in program history.
NCAA RECORDS... Green Bay is no stranger to the NCAA record book. Green Bay entered this
season as the eighth winningest team (based on percentage) in Division I. With
its recent win over Detroit Jan. 14, Green Bay has assured itself of its 35th
consecutive winning season which ranks third all-time behind Louisiana Tech and
Tennessee who both have 38 consecutive winning seasons.
