GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The top two scoring teams in the Horizon League meet Thursday, Jan. 12 as
No. 14/12 Green Bay (13-0, 3-0 HL) travels to the Nutter Center to face Wright
State (11-5, 4-0 HL) at 6 p.m. CT. The winner will have sole possession of
first place in the league standings as the Phoenix and the Raiders enter
Thursday's contest as the only unbeaten teams in the conference.
Green Bay leads
the Horizon League averaging 77.0 points while Wright State is averaging 66.2 points. Reigning Co-Horizon League Player of the week Julie
Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) leads the conference scoring 20.2 points per game
while the Raiders are being paced by freshman Kim Demmings who is pouring in an
average of 15.2 points per game.
With a win Thursday, Green Bay would tie the
program's regular season winning record, 34 games, which spans from Jan. 4,
2009-Jan. 16, 2010. Green Bay has won its last 29 regular season games against
conference opponents and is one of four unbeaten teams in the country through
games played Jan. 8. The Phoenix is coming off a dominant 88-53 win at
Milwaukee Jan. 7 in which Wojta grabbed a league and program record 12 steals
in the win while pouring in a game-high 27 points.
Wright State
enters Thursday's contest coming off two road wins over Loyola and UIC by a
combined four points. The Ramblers erased a 14-point halftime deficit to edge
Loyola 64-62 Jan. 5 before erasing a nine point second half deficit to hold on
for the 62-60 win over UIC Jan. 7. Under second year head coach Mike Bradbury,
Wright State was picked to finish third in this year's Horizon League Preseason
Poll.
LAST MEETING... Green Bay and
Wright State last met in the Horizon League Semifinal game Mar. 11. Current
Phoenix starter Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) poured in a career-high 27
points in Green Bay's dominant win over the fourth seeded Raiders, advancing to
the championship game.
In its last
trip to the Nutter Center (Mar. 3), though Green Bay had a 30-27 advantage over
the Raiders at halftime, head coach Matt Bollant felt his team was outplayed by
the Raiders. Green Bay outscored Wright State 17-6 throughout the first nine
minutes of the second half while its defense forced eight turnovers. "I thought
Julie's leadership really carried us in the second half," said Bollant of
Wojta's performance.
WOJTA THE THIEF...
Senior Julie Wojta had one of the best if not thee best
performances of her career in Green Bay's 88-53 win at Milwaukee Jan. 7. After
the Panthers took an early 12-10 lead in the first half, Wojta led Green Bay on
a 24-0 run with 15 points, including three from beyond the arc, seven steals
and two assists in 12 minutes of play. Wojta finished the first half with 11
steals, setting a new program record. Wojta scored eight points in the first
six minutes in the second half while grabbing her 12th steal of the game,
setting a new Horizon League record, two shy of the NCAA record 14. In
addition, Wojta poured in a game-high 27 points...all in 25 minutes of play.
Wojta currently ranks second in the country in steals per game with an average
of 4.1.
