GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Since the mid-1990's the Green Bay women's basketball team has hosted a
golf outing every summer in order to raise funds for its program. The 38-team
scramble was recently held at Thornberry Creek in Oneida, raising a record of over
$55,000.
"We are in awe of the people we have supporting our program,"
said head coach Matt Bollant. "I'd really like to thank the Fast Break Club,
especially Pat Duescher and Ron Pfeifer for all of their hard work in
organizing the event."
Funds raised by the Phoenix Fast Break Club from the golf
outing will be used to supplement the budget for the women's basketball program
for events such as holiday tournaments.
"We would not have been a five seed in the NCAA Tournament
had we not played against BCS schools and strengthened our schedule and this
money allows us to do that," said Bollant.
The foursome of Jeff Ness, Jeff Hebbard, Curt Schultz and
Mike Fitzgerald were the men's champions while the team of Lisa Roskum, Mike
Smits and Jeanne and Joe Stangel won the coed division. Women's basketball
alumni Kathy Mertz, Pam Roecker, Carrie Massey and Dawn Taddy claimed the women's
title.
In addition to golf, supporters participated in auctions and
raffles which included various donations from community supporters. The popular
item of the evening was a dinner at Coach Bollant's house which sold for
$3,000.
