GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - As its long-range shooting continues to improve, just as head coach Matt
Bollant predicted it would, the No. 18/16 Green Bay (22-1, 11-0) women's
basketball team continues to roll in league play with its 11-0 record against
conference opponents this season. Thursday, Feb. 10, Green Bay will look to
improve to 12-0 in league play as it travels to Chicago, Ill. to battle UIC
(10-11, 5-5 HL) at 4:30 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion. The contest will be part of a
doubleheader featuring the Green Bay men's team which tips off at 7 p.m.
against the Flames.
Green Bay is coming off an 84-25 win over Youngstown State (3-19,
1-10 HL) while posting its largest margin of victory (+59) in program history
since moving to Division I in 1987. In the contest Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) posted her fifth
double-double of the season pouring in 17 points while grabbing a game-high 11
rebounds as Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville,
Wis.) scored a game-high 20 points.
The Flames enter Thursday's contest with two consecutive
losses on its home court, most recently falling 62-47 to cross-town rival
Loyola on Feb. 5. Shameia Green paced UIC with 12 points while Jasmine Bailey
dominated on the boards grabbing 13.
Thursday's contest will feature two of the league's top five
rebounders in Green Bay's Kayla Tetschlag
(Sheboygan, Wis.) and UIC's Jasmine Bailey. Tetschlag is fifth in defensive
boards against league opponents averaging 6.3 per contest while Bailey is
second in offensive boards averaging 3.8 per game in league play.
During the first meeting between these two teams on Jan. 15,
Green Bay shot a season-high 63 percent in the first half and a season-low 25
percent in the second half. The Phoenix held off a late charge by the Flames to
capture the 60-51 win, which was also Bollant's 100th career win at the helm of
Green Bay.
Creating Distance... With its 84-25 win over Youngstown State
and Butler's second-consecutive loss on its home court, Green Bay sits three
games ahead of the Bulldogs atop the Horizon League standings with seven games
remaining in the season.
Flash Back... Head coach Matt Bollant and his
players are not oblivious to what happened during last season's trip to the
windy city when the Phoenix lost two consecutive league games for the first
time since the 1996-97 season. However this time around, Green Bay is focused
on now, taking one game at a time, "We don't think about last season, we're
just concentrating on getting ready for our next opponent," said Tetschlag. "I
think we're so much more experienced and grown more as a team than last season
when we made this trip."
Rising in the Rankings...
This week the
Phoenix made its biggest jump of the season in the AP Top 25 Poll, moving up
three spots to No. 18 while jumping up one spot to No. 16 in this week's ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coach's Poll. Green Bay
received its highest ranking of the season in both Top 25 Polls the week of
Jan. 17 at No. 21/15.
A Sneak Peak... The annual Teddy Bear Drive sponsored
by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be held in conjunction with the
women's basketball game against Valparaiso on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. All
teddy bears that are donated will be distributed through Bellin Health and Prevea
to area hospitals.
