GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 21/17 Green Bay (21-1, 10-0 HL) women's basketball team looks to
keep rolling in league play as it hosts Youngstown State (3-18, 1-9 HL)
Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Kress Events Center. Green Bay has won 18
consecutive regular-season games against league opponents. Most recently the
Phoenix captured an 87-63 win over Cleveland State Thursday, Feb. 3.
Green Bay scored a season-high 47 points in the first half
against Cleveland State and continues to improve its long-range shooting. The
Phoenix shot 47 percent from three-point land against the Vikings which was its
second-best percentage of the season.
Saturday's game features four of the Horizon League's best
shooters in Green Bay's Celeste Hoewisch
(Hortonville, Wis.), Kayla Tetschlag
(Sheboygan, Wis.) and Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) and Youngstown State's
Brandi Brown. Against league opponents, Hoewisch is seventh in three-point
field goal percentage (.395) and fifth in free-throw percentage (.860). Meanwhile
Tetschlag is sixth in scoring, averaging 17.0 points per game and second in
free-throw percentage (.911) while Wojta is fourth in field-goal percentage
(.578).
During the first meeting between these two teams on Jan. 6,
Tetschlag posted her third consecutive double-double of the season scoring 10
points while grabbing 10 rebounds. In addition, Wojta alone had as many points
as Youngstown State in the first half putting up 20 while leading the Phoenix
to a 38-20 halftime lead.
Creating Distance... With its 87-63 win over Cleveland
State and Butler's 55-51 loss on its home court against Detroit, both on Feb.
3, Green Bay sits two games ahead of Butler atop the Horizon League standings
with eight games remaining in conference play.
The Return of Ritchie... Cleveland State was the bookend of Adrian
Ritchie's (De Pere, Wis.) right MCL
injury as the sophomore returned to the court with 11:36 to play in the first
half against the Vikings on Feb. 3. Ritchie missed five games while rehabbing
the sprained knee suffered in Green Bay's first meeting with Cleveland State on
Jan. 8.
Alumni Returns to their
roots... Alumni of the
Green Bay women's basketball program attending Saturday's game will be
introduced at halftime. There will be an alumni basketball tipping off at 11:00
a.m. at the Kress Events Center. The contest is open to the public and
admission is free for the alumni contest only. In addition, the first ever
Carol Hammerle Scholarship recipient will also be announced.
Rising in the Rankings...
This week the
Phoenix moved up a spot to No. 21 in the AP Top 25 and fell one spot (17) for
the second consecutive week in the ESPN/USA
Today Top 25 Coach's Poll. Green Bay received its highest ranking of the
season in both Top 25 Polls the week of Jan. 17 at No. 21/15.
A Sneak Peak... The annual Teddy Bear Drive sponsored
by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be held in conjunction with the
women's basketball game against Valparaiso on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. All
teddy bears that are donated will be distributed through Bellin Health and Prevea
to area hospitals.
