GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's basketball team will play at
Southern Illinois in the 2011 BracketBusters on Saturday, Feb. 19, the Horizon
League announced Monday. The tip-off time for the game in Carbondale, Ill., has
not been set.
As
part of the BracketBusters agreement, Southern Illinois will make a return trip
to Green Bay, with the game likely to take place during the 2011-12 season.
Previously, return games were guaranteed for the following season, but return games
for this year's BracketBusters event can take place either next season or
during the 2012-13 campaign.
The
Salukis hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with the Phoenix. Green Bay's
lone win came on March 15, 1990 in the first round of the National Invitational
Tournament. The Phoenix has not played the Salukis since Dec. 22, 1990.
This
will be the eighth-straight season that Green Bay has participated in ESPN's
BracketBusters. The Phoenix has won its past two BracketBusters contests,
including last season's 60-59 victory over Indiana State on Feb. 20 at the
Resch Center. Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) had 22 points in
that contest for Green Bay.
Southern
Illinois, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, is 10-12 this season and
7-4 in conference play. The Salukis are led in scoring by senior Fay Carlton,
who is averaging 12.9 points per game.
Green
Bay, winners of six of its past eight games after an 85-74 win over Detroit
Sunday, returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, playing at Milwaukee at 2 p.m.
in a game that will be televised by ESPNU.
