GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - There was little doubt in Brian Wardle's mind, or even in the confident mind of freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.), that the
7-foot-1 freshman would break numerous blocked shots records in his time with
the program. In fact, for most that had seen him play a couple of times, it
seemed inevitable.
However,
Brown holding the school's single-season blocks record along with the records for
blocked shots in a game, blocked shots in a game at the Resch Center and blocks
by a freshman just 23 games into his first season of college basketball might have
come as more of a surprise.
Brown's
51 blocks this season place him among the top-10 in school history in career
blocked shots, nearly halfway to Terry Evans's record of 132 set between 2005
and 2009.
"To
be honest with you, I did not think he would do it this quickly," said Wardle, Green Bay's first-year head coach. "Alec
is a very bright player who is getting better every game. He is learning more
and more as he gains experience about staying out of foul trouble and not only
blocking but altering shots. He has certainly been a presence on the floor for us
who affects the game on both ends of the court."
In
Friday's 63-61 loss to Wright State, Brown blocked five shots in the first half
alone, surpassing the single-season record of 47 previously shared by Evans (2006-07)
and Larry Hill (1991-92). Showing his improved ability to stay out of foul trouble,
Brown played a career-high 36 minutes and had 12 points, nine rebounds and six
blocks against the Raiders.
Beginning
with a breakout 18-point, eight-rebound performance against Wisconsin on Dec.
13, Brown has become not just a shot blocker but a consistent scoring presence
for Wardle's team. In the 13 games since, the freshman is second on the team in
scoring (11.6 ppg) and leads the squad in rebounding (6.2). He has scored at
least eight points in 12 of those contests and failed to shoot 50 percent from
the floor only once (shooting 58.5 percent) during that span.
