GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Every season under the leadership of Phoenix head coach Matt Bollant, the
No. 23/18 Green Bay (16-1, 5-0 HL) women's basketball team has started Horizon
League play with a 5-0 record. Saturday Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. Bollant will look to
lead the Phoenix to a 6-0 start and his 100th win as the head coach of Green
Bay. With a win Saturday over UIC (7-8, 2-2 HL), Bollant would be the head
coach to win 100 games the fastest in Phoenix history.
UIC is one of two
teams in the Horizon League that has never won on Green Bay's home court with
Wright State being the other. UIC enters Saturday's contest after losing its
second-consecutive Horizon League contest on the road. The Flames fell 85-78 in
an overtime battle at Milwaukee (5-11, 2-3 HL) on Jan. 12. Meanwhile Green Bay
is coming off a72-51 win over Loyola in which Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored a game-high
25 points while leading all players with seven rebounds throughout 33 minutes
of play.
Green Bay hosted UIC last season Feb. 18, which was also the
last meeting between these two teams. After falling to the Flames 81-72 earlier
in the season on Jan. 23, the Phoenix repaid UIC with a 64-45 win at Green Bay.
The Flames enter Saturday's game leading the league in
offensive rebounds averaging 14.3 boards per game while Green Bay is fifth in
defensive boards averaging 24.4 per contest. The Phoenix leads the league in 11
of 20 statistical categories including scoring offense (71.6), scoring margin
(+18.8), field-goal percentage (.434), free-throw percentage (.800) and steals
(13.5) just to name a few.
Tough Tetschlag... Preseason Horizon League Player of
the year Kayla Tetschlag is off to a dominant start in conference play.
Tetschlag is leading the Phoenix averaging 16.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per
game against league opponents compared to 10.2 points and 6.7 boards against
non-conference opponents. She is also one of two players in the Horizon League to
open up conference play with three consecutive double-doubles.
Ritchie
Injury Update... Sophomore Adrian
Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) is expected to miss three to four weeks of play with a
sprained right MCL. Hannah Quilling (Eau
Claire, Wis.) has done a solid job filling in for Ritchie in the starting
lineup. In her first start this season against Loyola on Jan. 12, Quilling shot
4-6 from the field finishing with eight points, five assists while leading all
players with four steals.
Back in the AP
Rankings... After a four-week absence
from the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the Phoenix has rejoined the ranks at
No. 23. On Dec. 6 Green Bay entered the AP Poll the earliest time in program
history with its No. 23 ranking. After its 63-60 loss at Marquette Dec. 12,
Green Bay fell out of the poll but consistently received votes.
First in
National Statistic... Shooting 80
percent from the free-throw line, Green Bay ranks first in the country in
free-throw percentage after moving up from third last week behind first place
in-state rival Milwaukee. In addition, the Phoenix is ranked third in turnover
