Green Bay Hosts Loyola Thursday Night

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For With back-to-back wins in its rearview mirror, Green Bay looks to keep rolling on its current four-game homestand, hosting Loyola on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Resch Center. The young Phoenix squad, now 8-9 overall and 2-3, enters after wins over Houston Baptist and Milwaukee last week, and the team has also won four of its last six games dating back to December.

On Saturday, Green Bay built an 18-point second half lead and downed in-state rival Milwaukee, 69-64, in front of the season's biggest crowd at the Resch. Senior Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored a game-high 17 points for the Phoenix while classmate Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half.

It is the Phoenix defense which has highlighted its strong play of late. Green Bay's defense, led by 7-foot-1 freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) and his 2.2 blocks per game average, has held three-straight opponents to below 40-percent shooting from the field. Brown's 37 blocks have set a freshman record at Green Bay.

The first of two-straight Chicago opponents this weekend, Loyola enters after home losses to Detroit and Wright State last week. The Ramblers started the season at 7-0 before dropping seven of its last 10 games.

The Ramblers are led by a balanced attack which features four players averaging in double figures. Senior Geoff McCammon is averaging a team-high 12.9 points for Loyola's offense, which ranks fifth in the league at 70.3 points per game.

• DEFENSE, DEFENSE: The Phoenix defense has really turned it up a notch over the past three games. Green Bay has held Wright State, Houston Baptist and Milwaukee below 40 percent shooting from the field. A hot-shooting Milwaukee team entered Saturday's game having hit 27 threes in wins over Detroit and Butler, but the Phoenix limited the Panthers to 35.1 percent shooting from the field and 34.6 percent from long range. The 12 points in the paint for Milwaukee was also a season low for a Green Bay opponent.

• FRONTLINE FORCE: Green Bay's frontline of starters Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.), Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) and Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) and reserve center Greg LeSage (Radcliff, Ky.) stepped up with a big performance against Milwaukee. The quartet of post players combined for 29 points, 26 rebounds and five blocks. They also helped limit Milwaukee big man Anthony Hill to just 2-for-14 shooting.

• BOARDWORK: Green Bay has outrebounded five-straight opponents and all five of its foes in Horizon League play this season. The Phoenix has a plus-7.4 rebounding margin in conference games this season, and its plus-4.1 rebounding margin overall leads the league. In last Monday's win over Houston Baptist, three Phoenix players had nine or more rebounds, with Williams (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Brown (12 points, 10 rebounds) posting double-doubles.

• TOP-10 OF ALL-TIME: Fletcher moved into eighth place all-time on Green Bay's scoring list on Saturday, passing Bryan Boettcher. With 13 points against the Panthers, Fletcher now has 1,453 career points and is on pace to finish his career in fifth place all-time. Boettcher scored 1,440 career points from 1975-78.
