GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - While the old mainstays - senior guards Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine - gained the headlines Saturday night by scoring a combined
30 points, it was play of the Phoenix newcomers that really highlighted Green
Bay's team effort in a 69-64 win over Milwaukee Saturday night at the Resch
Center.
Head
coach Brian Wardle added seven newcomers to a depleted roster when was hired in
April of last year. He has inserted four of those newcomers into the starting
lineup a combined 49 times, and three of them, including two true freshmen,
started alongside Fletcher and Perine Saturday night.
Freshmen
post players Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) and Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) and junior college transfers Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Steve Baker (St. Paul, Minn.) made significant contributions on both ends, combining
for 34 points and 25 rebounds.
In
just 16 minutes of action due to foul trouble, Brown was extremely efficient.
He had two buckets in the first three minutes, including an athletic catch and
finish on a fast break. He sank 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute, justifying
head coach Brian Wardle's decision
to get him the ball in the late-game pressure situation. His defense helped
limit Milwaukee big man Anthony Hill to just 2-of-14 shooting. Brown finished
with nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Turner
had nine points and three rebounds in 21 minutes, and a scary play in the second
half showed the toughness he brings to the Phoenix. He landed on his head after
a fall midway through the second half, but came back in quickly to help Green
Bay finish the win.
"He's
the one guy I don't worry about when he falls on his head," Wardle said.
"Trust me, that kid is as tough as nails. Tough as nails. Of course, he
bounces right back up and I don't know if he knew where he was at first. But
then he's like, 'Coach, leave me in. I'm fine.' You have got to love that kid.
Love the energy and toughness he brings."
Williams
totaled six points and seven rebounds, and his versatility showed with his
defense that limited former junior college teammate and Milwaukee point guard Kaylon
Williams to just five points through the first 35 minutes.
Then
there is Baker, who accepted a move to the bench when Williams returned from
injury in December. Baker played 31 minutes, reaching double figures with 10
points and continuing to help on the glass (7 rebounds) despite standing just
6-foot-2.
All
four aided a Phoenix defensive effort that held a hot-shooting Milwaukee team
to just 35. 1 percent shooting from the field and helped Green Bay improve to
6-2 at home this season.
