CLEVELAND, Ohio
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 20 Green Bay (14-1, 3-0 HL) women's basketball team looks to
extend its winning streak at Cleveland State (9-5, 2-1 HL) to nine games as it
wraps up its first league road trip of the season at the Wolstein Center
Saturday at 1 p.m.
Both teams have made the NCAA Tournament two of the past
three seasons and have players on this year's All-League First Team. Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.), Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.)
and Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.)
from Green Bay and Shawnita Garland from Cleveland State.
Cleveland State won the last meeting between these two teams
in overtime play (83-75) on Mar. 12 in the Horizon League Championship game
held in Green Bay. The Phoenix is 47-5 overall against the Vikings and 20-2 in
Cleveland.
Green Bay is coming off a 71-57 win over Youngstown State
(2-12, 0-3 HL) where Wojta led all players with 24 points (20 in the first
half) and Tetschlag posted her third consecutive double-double. Meanwhile
Cleveland State enters the contest after a tough fought 77-60 win over
Milwaukee (3-11, 0-3 HL) where Garland led all players with 23 points while
Shalonda Winton posted her sixth double-double in the Vikings' win.
Battle in the Paint... It will be a battle down low as
Tetschlag and Winton lead the league with six double-doubles on the year.
Scoring Defense... The Phoenix is first in the league in
scoring defense holding its opponents to an average of 52.7 points per game
while Cleveland State is second holding its opponents to 59.6 points per
contest.
League Thieves... Green Bay is dominating the league in
steals with 206 averaging 13.7 picks per contest while Cleveland State is
second averaging 10.7 steals per game. Individually, four Green Bay players
rank in the top ten in steals per game in the league. Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) is fourth averaging 2.8 per game while
Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.)
Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.)
and Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) are
fifth, sixth and eighth respectively. Cleveland State's Shawnita Garland paces
the league with an average of 3.4 picks per game.
In the
Rankings... In this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll Green Bay moved
up one spot to No. 20. The Phoenix is knocking on the door of the AP Top 25
Poll. For the second consecutive week, the Phoenix is in the 26th spot. Green
Bay tallied 69 points in this week's poll while No. 25 Arkansas (12-1) has 72. In
addition, the Phoenix has retained the top spot in the CollegeInsider.com
Mid-Major Top 25 Poll after receiving 27 of a possible 31 first-place votes.
Club Membership... Senior Kayla Tetschlag joined classmate Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) in the 1,000-point club in
Green Bay's 69-62 win over Detroit on New Year's Eve. With 3:54 remaining Tetschlag
gave the Phoenix its final lead of the contest off a bucket down low.
