GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After opening Horizon League play with a 2-0 record at home, the No. 20
Green Bay (13-1, 2-0 HL) women's basketball team will face Youngstown State
(2-11, 0-2 HL) in its first league road contest of the season on Jan. 6 at 6:05
p.m. The Phoenix enters the contest after a 2-0 start in conference play for
the seventh consecutive season.
Youngstown State is one of three teams in the Horizon League
that Phoenix head coach Matt Bollant has
a perfect record against (6-0), with Milwaukee (8-0) and Wright State (8-0)
being the other two. With an overall record of 22-1 against the Penguins, Green
Bay's lone loss came Feb. 19, 2005 (60-56) in Green Bay. Since then the Phoenix
has won the past 10 consecutive games against YSU.
The last time Green Bay played at Youngstown State, Jan. 4,
2010, the lead changed six times throughout the contest. The Penguins led by as
many as six with 5:11 to play in the first half. Green Bay's defense struggled,
giving up 60 points as Youngstown State shot a season-best 50 percent against
the Phoenix. In its final meeting of the season on Mar. 4, 2010, Green Bay
posted its second largest margin of victory over the squad (84-45).
Three-Point Threat... Green Bay's 17th-ranked scoring
defense will have its hands full with Penguins junior Kenya Middlebrooks. In
addition to finishing with a career-high 22 points against UIC Jan. 2,
Middlebrooks tied the Youngstown State record sinking seven three-pointers.
Brown Big on the Boards...
The Phoenix will
face one of the league's top scorers and rebounders in Youngstown State
sophomore Brandi Brown. Brown is third in both statistics averaging 16.4 points
per game and 9.2 rebounds per game.
League Thieves... Green Bay is dominating the league in
steals with 191 averaging 13.6 picks per contest. Individually, Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) is third
in the conference averaging 2.9 steals per game while Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) are fifth and sixth
respectively.
In the
Rankings... In this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll Green Bay moved
up one spot to No. 20. The Phoenix is knocking on the door of the AP Top 25
Poll. For the second consecutive week, the Phoenix is in the 26th spot. Green
Bay tallied 69 points in this week's poll while No. 25 Arkansas (12-1) has 72. In
addition, the Phoenix has retained the top spot in the CollegeInsider.com
Mid-Major Top 25 Poll after receiving 27 of a possible 31 first-place votes.
Club Membership... Senior Kayla Tetschlag joined classmate Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) in the 1,000-point club in
Green Bay's 69-62 win over Detroit on New Year's Eve. With 3:54 remaining
Tetschlag gave the Phoenix its final lead of the contest off a bucket down low.
