August 4, 2010 - After
a historical 2009 season, the Green Bay men's soccer team is ranked in the
first preseason poll released today by College Soccer News. The Phoenix is
ranked No. 29 in the top 30 national poll which is led by 2009 College Cup runner-up,
Akron.
Green Bay is the lone team from the Horizon League and one
of eight schools from the Great Lakes Region ranked in the poll. In addition,
this is the first time Green Bay has been ranked in a preseason poll under head
coach Tom Poitras who is entering his sixth season with the Phoenix.
In 2009, for the first time in program history, Green Bay
won the Horizon League Tournament Championship and made its first appearance in
the NCAA tournament in 26 years. College Soccer News had the following to say
about Green Bay's anticipated 2010 season,
"The Phoenix took its game
to a higher level last year winning the Horizon League Championship and earning
a berth in the NCAA Tourney. Plenty of ability returns beginning with
All-American J.C. Banks (13 goals, 10 assists). Midfielder Tony Walls will set
the pace. David Prochazka and goalkeeper Ryan Wehking will be the heart of the
defense."
Green Bay will kick off the 2010 season at home against
DePaul on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7:00 p.m. followed by Oregon State on Saturday
at 7 p.m.
