GREEN BAY, Wis. - It
wasn't pretty, but a win is a win, especially when the ball is turned over a
total of 55 times. The Green Bay (3-0) women tried to speed up the tempo of the
Florida International (2-2) basketball team Saturday night and in doing so,
turned the ball over 23 times but came away with the 67-56 win.
"We wanted to make it a full court game because we knew we
could wear them out but I think our kids hurried too much," said head coach
Matt Bollant.
Green Bay's defense carried them into the locker room with a
30-22 lead at the half as the Phoenix forced 18 turnovers but only shot 39%.
"They
came out in zone and we just missed wide open threes," said Bollant.
Florida International's intensity at the start of the second
half forced Green Bay to turn the ball over five times in the first four and a
half minutes. The Panthers were able to cut Green Bay's lead to three but it
didn't last long.
Junior Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored 11 of her 19
points in the second half to lead the charge for the Phoenix.
"I felt Kayla
played with a lot of poise in the second and really helped put points on the
board," said Bollant.
Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) and Celeste Hoewisch
(Hortonville, Wis.) chipped in 11 points each as Green Bay went on a 24-6 run in
the second half to pull away from FIU and remain undefeated in the young
season.
Green Bay will travel to Madison on Tuesday to face in-state
rival Wisconsin at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten
Network.
